to ensure required |Target Mean Strength by controlling the
parameters of aggregate, sand and water accurately ....n
also to design higher grade of concrete ...
....incase of nominal mis method(say),M15 means 15mpa
comp.srength on 28 days using 1:2:4 proportions without
considering various conditions of conareting
materials ...the same will be rectified in design mix .
simply nominal mix is blind technique where as design mix
is live n vibrant method of mix design in concrete
technology to achieve anticipated TMS.

design mix of concrete give the exact quantity of material
such as cement, sand, aggregate & water.so that economy in
the material can be possible. higher strength of concrete
can be achieved with min. content of admixtures

The basic difference betn the two is;
Nominal - Volumetric Batching.
Design - Weight Batching.
In design mix degree of quality & control on quantity is
highly maintained.

In the code specified ratio there is no any consideration
of workebility, which in one of the mandetory aspects to be
considered. But by mix design we can design the concrete of
required workebility without sacrificing the strength.

Because the properties of available material is varies from
site to site.It is preferable because we want to get
strength of concrete at optimum cost. You can use nominal
method of mix if you are able to provide standard
characteristics to the all material.

Design mix is carried out for the optimization of concrete,
to increase its durabilty and to decrese its permeability.
WC ratios is also reduced.
Design mix is based on the specific weights of the material
where as 1:2:4, 1:3:6 etc are volumetric based design

Answer / rakesh kumar mallik
By design mix of concrete we can achieve more workable
concrete without hampering the strength of concrete which is
not possible in nominal mix of concrete.
By design mix we have have control over the quantity of
material, water cement ratio to achieve the required strength.
