gateway service helps to make communication and data
transfer within two/more application in our landscape. as
the communication with two applications uses RFC method in
sap, this RFC connection is made via this gateway service.
you can see this in Tcode - SMGW

Gateway server allows the communication between R3, R2 and
external applications.
Its function is to exchange large amount of data between
application servers; in contrast to the message server which
only exchanges brief internal and control messages. The SAP
gateway exchanges application data, thus the amount of
information is large.

The main use of gateway is to allow the communication between the systems. without gateway rfc will not work
To establish a connection and to send data between the systems gateway is compulsory and here in sm59 while we are creating a abap connection in that technical settings we need to define the gateway hostname and gateway service name
