Answer / priya
starter is mainly used to limit the starting current ,which
is very much greater i.e 4 to 5 times at the time of
starting.we have to limit this.otherwise it may damage the
other equipments also.for that we are using starter ..
it limits the current by adding resistance in the circuit.
various types of starters available.
2 point,3 point,4 point types are widely used.....

if u r using stat delta in induction motor it will reduce
stating current .57(aprrox),in the case of d.c motor
application it limit statrting current according to emf
equation E=v-iara
ia=v-E/ra
where ra aramature is very less.normally in the order of
ohms.at starting E is zero.so ia=v/ra so current will be
high.

During Starting Motors take a very high current i.e.-5 to 7
times of its normal rating which can cause damage the
machine due to excessive also cause a sharp voltage dip
which is unacceptable for other equipment connected to same
line.
To prevent from this high starting starters are used

dc motors r self started motors.but as d initial resistance
is small ..by ohms law v sa dat current inc.so inord 2
reduce d inflow of current n 2 run the motor in safe zone v
vl use this starter.
v can c it in 3-pt.starter,4-pt starter.

starter are use to reduce the high starting current and provide protection against under voltage & overload condition
in dc motor 3-pt & 4-pt starter are use. the resestance are ude to limit high starting current & nvc are use to other protection.
in ac motor dol ,star-delta,& autotransformer are use.

Starter are basically used to reduce the starting current.
I = ( V - Eb ) / R.
Where I is the field winding current,
V the voltage and Eb - Back up emf and R the winding resistance.
During starting Eb = 0, and R - a very small resistance.
so, as the high current passes through the winding, there is
chance for winding to burn out. When the motor attains the
normal speed it generate the back up emf, enough to reduce
the winding current.
To avoid this we need to reduce the voltage(V) or increase
the winding resistance. Since the reduction of supply
voltage is difficult to attain, a starter is used, which
will push high resistance during starting and gradually
reduces and fully removed from the circuit when the motor
attains the full speed.

IF YOU GIVE SUDDENLY MAXIMUM (FULL) CURRENT APPLIED ON
MOTOR MEANS THE MOTOR COIL SYSTEM WAS TOTALLY DAMAGED.SO
WILL USE THE STARTOR MEANS TO GIVE THE CURRENT IS

ac motor thr rotor current dirctly proportional to slip
at the moment of starting the rotor is standstill, it means
the slip has the it is maximum value so therotor current
also maximum so,it cause rotor is burned. to avoid it we
must provide the stater.
