Answer / sriram sarma
Starter is used for a motor to limit the high starting
current. During starting of a dc motor high current of upto
4-5 times the full load current occurs which is avoided by
use of high resistance slowly cut out of the circuit.

Starter are basically used to reduce the starting current.
I = ( V - Eb ) / R.
Where I is the field winding current,
V the voltage and Eb - Back up emf and R the winding resistance.
During starting Eb = 0, and R - a very small resistance.
so, as the high current passes through the winding, there is
chance for winding to burn out. When the motor attains the
normal speed it generate the back up emf, enough to reduce
the winding current.
To avoid this we need to reduce the voltage(V) or increase
the winding resistance. Since the reduction of supply
voltage is difficult to attain, a starter is used, which
will push high resistance during starting and gradually
reduces and fully removed from the circuit when the motor
attains the full speed.

starter used to reduce the starting current of the motor.
and to safe the motor winding in the high starting
current.different type of starter used to the motor. i.e, 3
point starter,4 point starter used to d.c and a.c motors.

generally the resistance of armature is very small i.e in
term of .05ohm or like this.this is due to reduce the
losses.if the motor is connected direct supply high current
will flow and it may burn the armature winding.thats why
starter is connected between supply and motor which reduces
the starting current and provided smooth operation

Electrical starters are generally used to limit the sarting current of the inputed voltage to any d.c. motor. when voltage supply is given to a d.c. motor the current is so high that it can burn the armature windings. So to avoid this dammage we generally use a starter. 4-point starters are used to control the starting current of a d.c. compound motor.

starter is used for a motor because at the time of starting
the armature current flow is very high .So,in order to
minimise the flow of high current, starteris used which is
connected in series with the resistance.

intially motor starting current is very high. its 4-to 5
times of the rated current value. its higher value of the
cuarrent burs the winding of the motor so reduce the
startig current value we put the starter.starter function
is intially high resistance in the circuit so current its
reduceand we provide the protection.

consider a 3phase induction motor,it is a selfstarting
device.Eventhough it is a selfstarting one we are connecting
this device to starter because if we can not connect this
motor to stator because of sudden flow of currents in the
rotor windings some damage may takes place to the machine.so
we can start up the motor with starter means we can limit
the currents to certain value upto which the rotor gets
accelerated. When ever rotor attained its rated speed then
there is no problem of current flow.
