Answer / sanjay lashkari
vortex flowmeters utilise the phenomenon called vortex
shedding that occurs when a fluid flows against a
non-streamlined obstruction, termed a bluff body. the
peripheral layers of the fluid are unable to follow the
defined contours of the bluff body & seperate from its
surfaces to form vortices that are swept downstream. (
kamran vortex street).
the shedding frequency is directly proportional to the free
velocity over a wide range of flow, excluding the laminar
region.
these vortices manifest themselves as sinusoidal pressure
variations.these pressure variations are converted in to
sinusoidal current signal.

in fluid pipe the vertices generated by the bluf body is
directly propositional to flow...and this measrement can b
in any sort , like frequency and also resistance ... the
frequency by means of ultrasonic trx and rx.... resistance
is by strain guages...but this method is better for fluids
of turbulant , for laminar flows those instrument methods r
less sensitive to respond.

The principle of a vortex flowmeter’s operation is based on a phenomenon of vortex shedding
known as the Von Karman effect of flow across a bluff body. A bridge pier in a river generates
Von Karman vortices. The principle states that flow alternately sheds vortices from one side to
the other side of a bluff body. The frequency of the shedding is directly proportional to fluid
velocity across the body. As a fluid passes the bluff body it separates and generates small eddies
or vortices that are shed alternately along and behind each side of the bluff body.
The output of the vortex flowmeters depends on the K-factor. The K-factor relates the frequency
of generated vortices to the fluid velocity. The K-factor varies with the Reynolds number, but is
virtually constant over a broad flow range. Figure 71 shows the relationship between two
numbers. The formula for fluid velocity is
Fluid velocity =Vortex frequency/K - factor
