WHY THE WIDITH OF COLUMN IS TAKEN FOR DESIGN OF ISOLATED
FOOTING??

Answer / pooja
width of column is required for many aspects of design of,
isolated footing
1 for calc. of load of column
2 for providing dimension of footing in the same ratio as
that of the column
3 for B.M & S.F calculation also max. dis is taken by
deducting dim. of col.

Answer / minaz akbar
depth of the footing is decided by punching shear/diagonal
shear and the bending moment..... the max depth is given by
punching shear.... and all the three methods depend on the
width of the column. the thickness of the footing should be
able to resist the tendency of the column to penetrate and
punch a hole through the foundation block.

IT SEEMS ANSWER BY MR MINAZ AKBAR IS CENT PERCENT CORRECT
AS THE FOOTING IS DESIGNED FOR PUNCHING SHEAR AND DIAGONAL
SHEAR THE PERIPHERY OF COLUMN IS TAKEN FOR CALCULATING
PUNCHING SHEAR......BENDING MOMENT MAY VARY DEPENDING ON THE
THE OVERHANG PORTION OF THE FOOTING AND IT MAY NOT BE A

Answer / dr.eng.mustefa
moment at the face of column is main for footing design..
even tapering may not be needed as it is done only to save
concrete as steel is required in free end
but in case of deep footings more than 1.5 feet double
reinforcement is given at top and botttom
,you know that punching force and wide beam forces are
considered; by leaving the place covered by the column
dimenshions, and taking critical sections arround the
footing. I think it is enough Answer.

do u mean we can take moment for the whole width of footing
moment at the face of column is main for footing design..
even tapering may not be needed as it is done only to save
concrete as steel is required in free end
but in case of deep footins more than 1.5 feet double

Firstly size of the column is required for calculating the
max bending moment occuring at the face of the column i.e
for calculating the depth based on B M cretiera.
Secondly size of the column is required for calculating
the max punching shear force that has to resist i.e for
calculating the depth based on punching shear cretiera.
Out of the above II cases max depth has to considered.
