HOW TO FIND OUT 1. LINE CURRENT, 2. PHASE CURRENT IN AN
ALTERNATOR / TRANSFORMER WHICH IS FEEDING A I)STAR LOAD ii)
DELTA LOAD, USING A CLAMP METER.

NORMALLY WHEN WE USE CLAMP METER IN A DG SET THEN WHAT DO
WE GET?? PHASE CURRENT OR LINE CURRENT.

HOW TO FIND OUT 1. LINE CURRENT, 2. PHASE CURRENT IN AN ALTERNATOR / TRANSFORMER WHICH IS FEEDING ..

Answer / thowsif

In Star System Line Current = Phase Current

In Delta System Line Current = Root 3 Times the Phase
Current.

It Only a Line Current not the Phase Current.

HOW TO FIND OUT 1. LINE CURRENT, 2. PHASE CURRENT IN AN ALTERNATOR / TRANSFORMER WHICH IS FEEDING ..

Answer / sudheer

line current means the current flowing through the AC
supply lines.phase current means current flowing through
each phases like R or Y or B phases.relation between line &
phae currents are

star connected system: phase current =linecurrent
delta connected system: phase current ={ linecurrent/√3}

for balanced 3Ф 4W system current flowing through the
neutral will be sum of phase currentsand will equal to zero.
ie Ir+Iy+Ib =0 =In

HOW TO FIND OUT 1. LINE CURRENT, 2. PHASE CURRENT IN AN ALTERNATOR / TRANSFORMER WHICH IS FEEDING ..

Answer / subrata sur

In clamp meter we get line current because phase current is
only inside the alternator.

Now for star load,
line current = phase current = clamp meter reading

and for delta load,
line current = clamp meter reading
phase current = clamp meter reading / 0.732

HOW TO FIND OUT 1. LINE CURRENT, 2. PHASE CURRENT IN AN ALTERNATOR / TRANSFORMER WHICH IS FEEDING ..

Answer / sumit dhar

Lets say we are using transformer,

A delta star transformer, the 3 phases coming out of the
star side of the transformer are the red, yellow and blue
wires abbreviated as R Y and B. The Current flowing through
these wires is the Line current. Using a Clamp meter, we
should clamp the meter to one of the wires say R phase. The
measured value will b Line current passing through R phase.
If the load is Balanced load, then equal amount of current
will flow through the Phases R Y and B respectively. After
that we can measure the Phase current using the formula
given above.

I WOULD LIKE TO CLARIFY THE DOUBTS OF MR ANANDHARAJ'S
COMMENTS IN ANSWER 8.. HE FAILED TO UNDERSTAND THE BASICS
OF ELECTRICITY THAT CURRENT ALWAYS FLOW IN A CLOSED LOOP SO
THERE IS NO QUESTION OF OPENING THE LOOP ...AND MOREOVER
WHEN USING CLAMP METER, YOU DONT NEED TO OPEN A CIRCUIT...
SO WHAT I MEANT BY "OPENING" IN ANSWER NO 2 WAS OPENING THE
ENCLOSURE OF THE SOURCE OR THE LOAD IN ORDER TO ACCESS THE
JUNCTION... I HOPE NOW MR ANANDHARAJ WOULD BE IN A BETTER
POSITION TO APPLY HIS RICH EXPERIENCE AND GUIDE A NOVICE
LIKE ME TO GAIN SOME PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE.. THANKS FOR YOUR
INTEREST.

HOW TO FIND OUT 1. LINE CURRENT, 2. PHASE CURRENT IN AN ALTERNATOR / TRANSFORMER WHICH IS FEEDING ..

Answer / nirav_patel2120

The current flowing in each line is called line current.&
Current in each winding is likewise known as phase current.

In star load
line current=Phase Current.
In Delta load
line current=√3 Phase current.
