The Genearl Item category is the default item category
proposed in the material master in the Basic data1 and
Sales org2 view. This is controoled by the assignment of
item category group to the Material Type
The item category group which is in the Sales org2 view
controls or influences the determination of the Item
category in the sales document example
1. Norm default changed to BANS determines TAS as the item
category in the sales document for Third party item
2. NORM changed to ERLA chnages the item to Item category
TAQ a structure scope item with pricing relevant for TAQ
only
3. NORM changed to LUMF chnages item category in sales
document as TAP with structure and pricing not relevant

General Item category Group* is an extension item category
group.
Example: if one select item catagory group as NORM, but
under item category group, NORM can
Further be classified as Service item, packagaing item or
Normal item using "general item category group". General
item category group is maintained at client level, this
field can be maintain from Basic Data View of Material
Master. Thus in case item category group is missing, then
general item category group is used for item category
determination.
Item category group* determines how a material is processed
in the sales order. When processing sales and distribution
documents, the system uses the item category group to
determine the item category and proposes it in the
respective document. Item category group is defined in the
Sales Org View 2 of Material Master Record.

Hi !
General item category group is basically used by MM people
to grouping the material . it is not used by the SD people.
Materials grouping that helps the system to determine item
categories during sales document processing.
If a group is configured specific to distribution channel,
it has priority if the corresponding activity is
distribution channel-dependent.
Procedure
The system automatically suggests an item type in the
document depending on the item category group you assign
and the sales document type you are processing.
The Item category group is used by the SD people for Item
category assignment &
