because total losses depend upon cu losses and iron losses cu losses deped on current and iron losses depend on voltage so total losses will be volt amp thats why rating in KVA

Transformer's rating is always shown in kva instead of kw because there is no phase difference between current and voltage. it is multiple of primary current and primary voltage for single phase transformer and √3*V*I for three phase transformer
