On line UPS means Supply will come from batteries on line
and charging also on line.
In OFF line UPS supply will come from batteries when main
line supply fails.Batteries will charge on line.

in online ups
supply is coming from ups only it will charge on online &
start when your main supply goes that means you machine or
system will not get tripping
in offline ups
when supply gone ups will start to give power so in that
your system will get small time triping

On line ups are use in software company side for ..........Offline ups are used in home need purpose
Online ups means-no interruption
Off line ups means-slightly interruption

Besides above mentioned answer (1) I would like to explain some points--
1)Using a online UPS is advantageous for us because of interruption of line supply.As mentioned after main supply fail we use power from battery...........this is a problem :the time it takes to changeover .for example,if our system is much sensitive we may get interruption in getting supply. Normally the the change over time is in order of few millisec.
2) Online UPS is observed to be more economical for higher rated UPS.
