actually both mean the same and may differ in some cases.....
because both are used to vary the voltage....

fixed in the winding but varic secondary voltage is providig
a sliding tip along the all of winding

with tappings
but with variac any variation in the given range is possible
for example a 230v/270 v variac is used to vary the voltage
in range of (0-270)v
