The characteristics in the area are not displayed in the
intial view of the query but you can drill down and filter
once execute the query.

If you put a characteristic in the free characteristic and
exexute the query it will not display in the result row,
but we can see in the navigational block, upon the
requirement we can drill down.

Free characteristics means the objects dragged into this
column are not displayed in the initial query view. Free
characteristics are available for navigation in the BEx
Analyzer or in analytic Web applications.(When you double
click on free characteristics in report then they are
displayed.
