surge arresters are also called as lighting arresters. They
are always connected in shunt to the equipment to be
protected. They provide a low impedance path for the surge
current/surge voltage to the ground.
when the lightening ocurs, there is a voltage around some
thousands of voltage on line (35000v to 5000v) for a
fraction of second which is very high more than enough to
damage all the equioments in the grid connected to it.so
when a lightning arrester is connected then it provides a
low impedance path such that all that high voltage is
directed towards the earth resulting the protection of all
the equipments connected to the grid.

Surge means sudden increament. In electrical ckts, due to
some internal & external faults. sometimes the fault may
induce the overcurrent or overvoltage. to protect the
system from this spikes, we use the surge arresters.

surge arresters is protection device protect from lighting
stroke , It help to discharge the lightning surges into the
earth by providing low resistance path , save the
electrical equipment against the Lighting

surge arrestor is the device which can only absorbs the
surges(high current) occuring due to any type of
symmetrical or unsymmetrical faults or due to lightening
strokes.it contains earthing resistors which can earth the
extra high current by providing a low resistance path.

When testing an earthing connection, we use a 60 or 100 candle bulb with a phase connected direct from supply and the other wire to the new earthing provided. If the bulb glows then the earth is ok.Else earth connection is not Ok. So, why dont we can use all the home appliances taking a single wire from the phase and the return connection to Earth instead of return connection to neutral?
