What is the de rating factor of cable? What is the importance of the de rating factor in cable sel..

Answer / Sabiha

The derating factor of a cable is a reduction factor applied to its allowable current-carrying capacity to account for factors such as ambient temperature, voltage drop, and installation conditions. The higher these factors, the greater the derating factor.

1. Ambient Temperature: Higher temperatures cause cables to heat up more quickly, reducing their life span and increasing the risk of electrical fires. To account for this, cables are rated for specific temperature ranges, and a derating factor is applied when operating at higher temperatures.

2. Voltage Drop: As the length of cable increases, so does the voltage drop across it. This can cause problems with equipment operation, especially sensitive devices like computers or motors. To minimize voltage drop issues, a derating factor is applied to cables that are longer than their recommended lengths.

3. Installation Conditions: Factors such as cable bundling, presence of combustible materials, and proximity to heat sources can also affect cable performance. A derating factor may be required in these situations to ensure safe operation and proper equipment performance.
