what are different types of excitation in synchronous
generator, what is the difference between them

Answer / sohail
Normally D.C excitation is used for exciting the field wdg
of generator. A.C excitation is also used but through
rectifier and supplied through brushes and sliprings.
Nowadays brushless exciter with field ckt on stator and
armature on rotor with rectifiers are used, directly
connected to the field wdg ,eliminating the use of brushes.

there are two types of exitation:
rotary
static
rotary:in it , dc generator is used for excitition, that have the combination of sliprings n carbon brushed, this generator has a moving rotor n static stator..sliprings converts the axial motion of current to radial, and then dc frm this generator is given to poles of ac generator..
static:
here ac supply is taken from reserve power distribution center(rpdc) i.e frm 11kv or smthng else trnsmissin lines n then it is stepdown 400v by excitation trnsfrmr n then this ac passes through rectifier bridge .and then it goes to poles of ac genrator....

In the small Generators the batteries are used for excitation while in big generators the excitor in built in machine on the rotor of generator which is dc small generator to provide excitation current. so there are two types of excitation i) seperately excited and self excited discussed later..
