What is the difference between Relay and Contactor..

Answer / kashif ghulam mohammad

The function of relay and contactor is that to ON or OFF
contacts when we give voltage coil of both devices but main
difference is that relay does not use maximum 5 amperes and
magnetic contactor can be see in more than 50 or 60
amperes. and I also wanted to mention it that relay is used
only in controlling circuit and contactor are used both in
controlling and power circuit......

What is the difference between Relay and Contactor..

Answer / francesco

The word relay comes from very old times and was used to call a set of horses that pull a car, when a relay of horses got tired they switch it for a fresh one. In electricity the use of a relay is the same, you use a relay to switch between loads or between sources, You have one terminal with two possibilities, in a NC relay if not powered you're using one contact and when the relay is powered you use the other, or backwards if the relay is a NO. A contactor only has one in and one out so in a NO contactor when not energized the contacts are open and when energized the contacts are closed or backwards if the contactors is NC.
So relay has one in and two out possibilities, contactor has one in one out.

OPERATE NORMAL OR ABNORMAL CONDITION TO TRIP THE C.B UNDER
PRESET VALUES IN ITSELF.

BUT CONTACTOR OPERATION NOT LIKE RELAY OPERATION.
