SAP ?

ALE is configured like this:
First setup logical system (BD54)
Assign the logical system to respective clients (SCC4)
Define the RFC destination (SM59)
Distribute the customer model(BD64)
Create the port(WE21)
Create the Partner profile (WE20)
To check the the Idocs (WE02/05)

ALE is down compatible, so the basic steps mentioned above
are correct.
The only change will be in segment and Idoc release
versions, set the latest setting on the upgraded versions
and it will be comaptible withe the lower version also, but
when the Idocs are transferred from higher to lower
versions, only the data compatible to older version will be
upgraded
