In 1970s polychlorinated biphenyls(PCB) Is used. But this is in toxicity, so (PCB) is banned in many countries. Today we are using non-toxic,stable silicon based OR flouridated hydrocarbons are used,so pentaerythritol tetra fatty acid(C7, C8) Esters are also becoming increasingly common as alternatives to Naphthenic mineral oil.

Transformer oil is basically a fresh dielectric oil and we call it transformer oil only. The qualities that it should posses are as follows
1. High dielectric strength. around 30kv/cm.
2. High flash and pour point.
3. It should not form toxic substances at high temprature.
4. It should have good insulation and cooling properties.
