Neutral is nothing but a point which doesnt have any
potential at all ie) 0V. We know in AC voltage varies from
+V to -V. To create a potential difference which obviously
make a current flow, neutral is used. In otherwords to form
a closed circuit neutral is used which absorbs the
electrons from a high potential region. With out neutral
aclosed circiut cannot be formed in onne phase.

neutral is used for safety......when there is a earth fault
occurs by connecting the device in neutral we can sense the
fault. Also to avoid multiple ground faults. To avoid arcing
ground in which if there is a fault between phase to earth
arc is produced due to which current flowing to ground is
very low, overcurrent can not operate on this small current
hence connecting the device in the neutral we can avoind
the high arcing grounds. For core balancing also neutral is
used.

In a single phase neutral is carrying return current to the
supply and three phase it carry unbalanced current to the
supply.
