An instance in SAP NetWeaver refers to a running system or application. It provides the runtime environment for one or more applications. There are two main types of instances: ABAP and Java. The ABAP instance is used for executing ABAP programs, while the Java instance is used for executing Java applications. Within these two instances, there are sub-instances called 'systems'. A system can consist of multiple clients, each running on their own instance or shared among different instances.
