I/P Converter , converts 4-20 mA signal from controller
to .2 to 1.0 Kg/cm2 pneumatic signal.
Positioner consist of air supply port , signal input port,
out put port. When positioner get in put signal ,it compare
with stem position and output is generated and signal
boosted sufficiently to operate the valve . It uses force
balance system.

It works on force balance principle. A coil is suspended
in a magnetic field on a flexible mount. At the lower end
of the coil is a flapper valve that operates against a
precision ground nozzle to create a backpressure on the
servo diaphragm of a booster relay. The input current flows
in the coil and produces a force between the coil and the
flapper valve, which controls the servo pressure and the
output pressure.Zero adjustment of the unit is made by
turning a screw that regulates the distance between the
flapper valve and the air nozzle. Span adjustmentis made by
varying a potentiometer, which shunts input current past the
coil.

I/P is input (requirement of process/operator) at which
valve needs to be operated.Positioner gives output
(feedback) to control loop about actual position of valve.
Conclusively-I/P-requirement, Positioner-job done
conformation

i to p is called current to pneumatic converter.i2p basically takes two inputs one from pressure regulator and one containing 4-20ma and i2p's output goes to positioner in 3-15psi signal form.
positioner provides signal or pneumatic air supply according to the bench set of control valve.each control valve have a bench set

Their are so many i/p technilogy come in view. like some i/p conveter works on flapper nozzele system but some i/p works on spool valve force balance system.
When we are looking for positioner function then we see soo many venders comes with different type of technology. But the basic principal remain same behind their product. Because all are using same micro-cantroler based smart positioner. They get feedback from position sensor that is connected to the steam of CV and the micro-controller calculate the output air Pr. after checking current Pr.and current command from dcs then generate the command and give to the output signal pressure unit. This process will adjust the steam position.

If a differential pressure transmitter is calibrated for 0~2500 mmH2o and transmits a 4~20mA dc signal. The transmitter is placed across an orifice plate which is sized to create 2500 mmH2o differential at 5000m3/Hr a) what is the flow rate when the transmitter signal is 13.0mA DC? b) what is the signal output of the transmitter when flow rate is 2500 m3/Hr ?
