karl fischer is based on the principle of bunsen reaction
where sulphur dioxide , iodine and a nitrogeneous base like
pyridine reacts to form the alkyl amino compounds which
reacts with water consuming it and hence determines the
extent of water present in the sample.

The property of karl fischer reagent is to absorb water, its
strength is generally mentioned on the bottle or can be
determined. Now, as it is being dissolved into the sample it
absorbs the water content of the sample and the solution
becomes water free and works as electrolyte solution and the
two electrodes complete the circuit (as it is dipped into
the solution) and gives signal to stop the flow of KF
reagent. With the help of KF volume (strength already known,
the water content in the sample is determined.
