During switching, especially capacitor banks, there will be
voltage surges at the system, to help protect the feeding
equipment from damage, surge arrestors are connected at
supply end and other end is grounded to bypass any peaks as
specified by the rating of surge diverters.

during lightening very high voltage passes through the tallest surfaces above ground level,buildings etc ,so in order to protect the appliances ,from damage, a surge arester is placed,it is nothing but a small rod placed on the peak of building ,when heavy currents flow through the aresters they flow the currents to earth,
