First you must know the ampere-hour of your battery bank as
per the manufacture's specification. Now discharge the
batteries as per the C5 rating( for Ni-Cd batteries) or C10
rating (for Lead -acid Batteries).Discharging can be done
by connecting the positive and negative terminals of
batteries to the copper plates and immersing in a salt
solution, which will act as a load. The distance between
the plates can be adjusted to set the discharge current.
Measure the amount of discharge current and time till the
battery voltage of each battery in a bank drops to 1 Volt
if it is a 1.4 volt cell. Now multiply the discharge
current and time. This is the measure of the Amperehour
capacity of the bank.If the Amppere -hour capacity as per
the manufacture is available then you can determine the
percentage capacity of your bank at present.Remember that
charging and discharging of battery bank improves the
health of the battery bank. However, for lead -acid
batteries these cycles are around 750 or say 3 years. For
Ni-Cd batteries the life is around 25years or more if
maintained properly.Selecting a overated battery is also
not adviseable as it won't get discharged completely and
this may result in sulfation of batteries and early death
of battery bank.
