Mechanical interlock is a means by which to ensure that any
person even unknowingly cant put him or the installation to
risk.
Eg: you might have seen some panels which cant be opened
unless the breaker is turned off. This is one case
The other most imp use is in places where generators are
used . Mechanical interlock ensures that at a time only one
of the supplies ( either generator or normal ) are working
else the generator may start feeding the line which is a
very dangerous situation.

Its is otherwise termed as Castel Key Interlock.
The primary function of this type of interlock we can
provide many mechanical locks in between the circuit
breakers or isolators but all the locks cane be opened only
with a single key. So if a key is engaged in a isolator or
breaker without shutting down of that breaker that key
cannot be removed and unlock the other cicuit breaker to
switch it on. By this way any mistake of operating 02
circuit breakers operating simultaneously is avoided.
