Offset is generally preferred in cam n followers to reduce the pressure angle DURING ASCENT OF THE FOLLOWER and REDUCE SURFACE WEAR of cam,to reduce side thrust also

Offset followers are used in case of mechanical systems
where the valves are not in constant touch with the push
rod or pull rod. Example Steam engine valves.
