MAINLY THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF FAULTS SHORT CIRCUIT AND OPEN
CIRCUIT FAULTS.IN SHORT CIRCUIT FAULTS WE STUDY ABOUT
SYMMETRICAL AND UNSYMMETRICAL FAULTS.THE THREE PHASE FAULT
WHICH IS RARE MOST SEVERE FAULT IS SYMMETRICAL FAULT.AND
LL.LG ,LLG ARE UNSYMMETRICAL FAULTS.By performing short
circuit MVA analysis for positive, negative and zero
sequences, symmetrical three phase
and unsymmetrical phase-to-ground, phase-to-phase and
double phase-to-ground fault currents can be resolved.

unsymmetrical faults,symmetrical faults,ground-to-
ground, line to ground ,nline to line and megger is a unit
to measure it.

Above answer is very correct
i want to add some value
for short circuit protection we use fuse as primary
protection & overload load relay for backup protection
for earth fault- we check phase to ground insulation
resistance,in case of earth fault its value comes to zero
For open circuit - check the continuity of supply

in addition to above ans i would like to add that for earth faults core balance transformers can be used.
