Power has two components - active power that is used in
doing useful work and reactive power that is a loss to the
system. Reactive power is given by sqrt(3)*VISin(phi)in
case of three phase power supply.
Reactive power is compensated by using capacitors or
synchronous motors which supplies the reactive power. These
measures improves the power factor of the system.

There are Three Types of power 1)Active Power 2)Reactive
Power 3)Apperent Power
*Active Power or True Power is used by Equ.to do actual
work Like-Rotation of Motor,Voltage generation of Generator
etc.
*Reactive power is imaginary power which is used by Equ.to
get Magnetised their winding ,sothat Equ. can do their
actual work.
It can be Compensated by Capacitor Bank,SYnchronous
Condenser ,By increasing of Excitation of Alternator.
