In case of a beam ,main steel is provided along the longer
span because, bending moment is directly proportional to
length but why in case of one way slab main steel is
provided along shorter span while as bending takes place
along longer span?comment

In case of a beam ,main steel is provided along the longer span because, bending moment is directl..

to avoid cofusion provide reinforcement in direction
perpendicular to flexural crack.

in case of slab---- yield line is parellel to longer span,
hence reinforcement is provided parellel to shorter span.

in case of beam flexural crack occures parallel to cross
section ( not parallel to length of the beam). hence
reinfocement is provided horizontally parralel to length.

In case of a beam ,main steel is provided along the longer span because, bending moment is directl..

Answer / c. mak

The primary load transfer direction will be in the shorter
span and as a result large negative bending moments will
occur at these supports. Therefore reinforcing steel is
required to cross these supports rather than the ones with
less load transfer, which occur in the supports with longer
span.

Benduing moment in any direction is proportional to the
curvature. Now the central deflection of slab in both the
direction is same. Since the length in the shorter
direction is less than other so curvature(1/R) value is
much in the shorter direction. So the BM is much in shorter
direction, requiring to provide reinforcement in shorter
direction.

in case of beam b.m takes place along the lenth so main bar
is provided in tat direction to resist b.m.but in case of
one way slab the bm along longer direction is too low as
compared to shorter direction so resisting this bm
distribution bar is enough.so main bar is provided in
shorter direction and also l/b ratio is greater than 2.

In case of a beam ,main steel is provided along the longer span because, bending moment is directl..

Answer / structural engineer

Any suspended horizontal member is designed to span between supports. Since the supports for beam is at the ends (and not on either side of the beam!!!), it is natural that the main steel is along the length.
In case of one way slab, it is supported on all four sides. It can, hence, be designed as spanning in any direction. When you have this choice, it makes sense to design it as spanning along the shorter direction since the moments would obviously be lower in the shorter direction.

For beam: Depth is more than width so we provide main bars
in longer span
For slab : Depth is lesser than width so we provide main
bars in shorter span

Answer / r.venkateshwar rao

The Bending moment in Oneway slab along shorter span is
much lesser than the longer span. It proportional to the
square of the span of the slab. Even we can have main steel
along the longer span but it leads to uneconomical.

in beam the breadth is small so no need for
distributionreinforcement, but in slab load will not be
distributed like beam....
