C-8 and C-18 are the columns used in the reverse phase of HPLC. The difference b\w the carbon chain length that is attached to the silica surface.C-8 has a packed material composed of silica particle of carbon units and C-18 is coated with hydrophobic units.

Answer / satyabana sahu
C18 is more hydrophobic then C8 because it has longer carbon chain. C18 is faster separation then C8. C8 may be used instead of C18 when shorter retention times are required.
C18 is often called the "traditional reverse phase matrix". Because it has the highest degree of hydrophobicity, C18 silica gel interacts with the widest range of compounds and the interactions are generally more pronounced.
