WILL ANY COLLEAGUE TELL ME THAT WATER RATIO IS FIXED FOR ANY TYPE OF CONCRETE? OR HOW CAN WE DETER..

Answer / santosh singh

According to British Standard Specifications

water requirement of concrete = 28% by weight of cement + 4% by total weight of aggregate

M25 M20 M15
proportion 1:1:2 1:11/2:3 1:2:4

water cement ratio 0.43 0.51 0.58
(by weight)

quantity of water is calculated as

for M20
wt of water/wt of cement(50kg) = 0.51

Wt of water per bag of cement = 0.51 x 50 = 25.5 liters

similarly for M25

wt of water per bag of cement = 0.43 x 50 = 21.5 liters

wt of water per bag of cement = 0.58 x 50 = 29 litres

In foundation design, while we do the base pressure check, we normally check if the attained pressure value is less than the GROSS BEARING CAPACITY of the soil which is the sum of net bearing capacity of soil and the overburden pressure. Actually, the overburden pressure acts against the net bearing capacity of the soil and I feel that we are actually increasing the bearing capacity value and doing the check. I feel that this is NOT right. Please clarify on this.
