it is a part of the boilers. here what happens is when the
hot gases after passing through water pipes contains some
amount of heat and this economizer helps absorbing that
quantity of heat which in turn improves the efficiency of
the boiler.

If the feed water is too cold then economizer  helps in pre heating the water before sending it to feed pump or evaporation zone
