Gland seal packing is to prevent air-ingress to the
turbine. Basically a steam turbine (condensing type)
operates under vacuum and to maintain this vacuum steam is
used gland seal packing for both front and rear side.

In the escape turbines it can be used to prevent air flow
to the outside so it can be improved the efficiency of the
turbine
