inter cooling purpose is to reduce the temperature of the
compress gas which reduce its volume, so the work done by
the comperessor will be less for less volume, which will
reduce the input power.
after the inter cooler there should be a seperetor to
prevent any liqude from entering the comperessor.

Inter cooler is provided after lp cylinder ,that reduces the temperature of the air delivered by lp cylinder at constant pressure so that the amount of work required to compress air in next(hp cylinder) stage is less ,hence the efficiency of compressor is increased.

Intercoolers are used to reduce the temperature of the incoming refrigerant from the previous compressor so that the volume of the previously compressed vapour refrigerant reduces and work requirement on the next compressor get reduced this result in less input power requirement.
