why are transformers rated in KVA and not in KW
Answers were Sorted based on User's Feedback
Answer / samir rana
cu lossof x mer depends on current and iron
loss on voltage total x mer loss depends on va and not on
phase angle between v and i it it is independent of load
power factor. that is why rating og x mers is in kva and
noy in kw.

Answer / praneetha
cu loss of a transformer depends on current and iron loss
on voltage.hence total transformerloss depends on volt
ampere and not on phaseangle between them.it is independent
of p.f.that is why transformers is in KVAand not in KW.

Only the voltage (V) or Current (A) is stepped up or down and there is no change in the power (W). Power in this case is reactive power not active power so it is mentioned as KVA.

Answer / ahamadkutty
A transformer is rated in VA or kVA because the kVA is the
vector sum of Active power IR and Reactive power
IX(l-c)which a transformer can be delivered. So depending on
the connected load with active and reactive component the
power kW will be varied keeping the kVA maximm at the rated
kVA of the transformer. For a fixed voltage the current
supplied by the transformer is the maximum fixed by the
formula VA/V and maximum power by the load.

Answer / osman mehmetukaj
because to remain constant power transformer
while only changing currents and tension in the primary and
the secondary opposite, for example: Ip X Up =Is x Us =S
S(=)kVA
