What happens if we give ac supply to dc shunt and series motors individually..

Answer / tanmay goon

motor will continue to rotate in same direction bcoz in ac
supply direction of current in both field and armature
changes simultaneously bcoz of which direction of resultant
field thus torque remains same.

What happens if we give ac supply to dc shunt and series motors individually..

Answer / kdharanya

both the motors will not rotate
when the teminal voltage supply for a dc motor is changed
its direction of rotation changes.
With a ac supply to its terminals there will the change in
the direction of supply every 20ms(in case of 50hz freq)
Due to this very high change in the direction of terminal
voltage and inertia of the motor the rotor does not rotate.

What happens if we give ac supply to dc shunt and series motors individually..

Answer / ganika

shunt motor won't rotate because alternating field developed in the both field and armature and peak voltage is more so takes more current and fuse blow out, due to over current.
series motor rotate as repulsion motor with over current and commutation, but the core are not laminated, so it produce more heat.

Is a contactor (or master relay) required between incoming lines and a VFD? The question goes to safety. If a contactor were used before the VFD and an e-stop engaged then the motor will coast to a stop (i.e. VFD loses power) instead of stopping much faster if the VFD braking fucntion were used. It would make more sense to keep power on the VFD.
