why is the rating of transformer done in kva and not in kw.

Answer / manthesh.patil
transformer is rated in kva bcoz cu losses are dependent on
current and iron losses are dependent on voltage ,& they are
independent on powerfactor so transformer is rated in kva
not in kw

Answer / lakshmanan m
According to my opinion, manufacturer cant design the
particular transformer for specific load (capacitive or
inductive load) Thats why they dont give the power in KW.
Because KW= vxIx power factor. but power factor is
depending upon the load. So commonly they are give the KVA
power only. It means KVA= Vx I only. According to the load
we can calculate the KW rating.

as core loss depends upon voltage & copper loss on
current independant of PF. HENCE RATING IS IN KVA

Answer / vasumalai madhavan
In transfomer, the core loss depends upon voltage and
copperloss depends on current , it was (transoformer) not
dependable on power factor . thats why the rating of the
transformer always in kva not in kw....

Answer / shinyvikram ganji
rating of the transformer is done based on losses(core and
copper losses).
| Is This Answer Correct ? | 4 Yes | 2 No |
Answer / ravi
transformer losses are in terms of current and voltage only
i.e (I Square R) copper loss and VI is the Core loss. i.e y
units are in KVA

Answer / beau
because transformer capacity takes care of both real power
consumed by resistive loads and reactive power in inductive
and capacitive loads such as motors and the transformer's
windings inductive reactance(Apparent power KVA).

Answer / thiyagarajan
kv is an apparent power kw is an active power the ratio
between active and apparent power is power factor ,we dont
know the power factor before connecting to load that why we
are used to refer kv in transmission
