Initial setting time means the time required by the plunger of vicat's apparatus to penetrate in cement mortar with certain standard depth usually time is 45 min
and hardening time means when the needle of vicat's app. just marks an impression on mortar after certain time usually 300 min.

setting time is the time in which concrete starts lossing its plasticity, but hardening time is that time in which concrete starts to gain strength.
