Why air gap in rotating machines should be small?..

Answer / sunil guru

THE MAGNETIC FIELD FLUX HAS TO COMPETE THE RELUCTANCE AND RELUCTANCE IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE AIR GAP ....
SO LESSER THE AIR GAP LESS IS THE LOSSES....

AIR GAP SHOULD BE LESS THAN 5 mm IN DC MC. AND LESS THAN 3 mm IN AC MACHINE

IF THE AIR GAP IS MORE THEN TO ESTABLISH THE MMF THE MACHINE WILL TAKE MORE CURRENT AND HENCE MORE IS THE LOSSES ....

Why air gap in rotating machines should be small?..

Answer / iamdon

The working flux travels through both the core and the air
gap.The ampere turn required to overcome the reluctance in
air gap is very large as compared to the iron or core
parts. In rotating machines, about 60-70 % of the total
ampere turns per pole are required for the air gap.So the
air gap length should be AS SMALL AS MECHANICALLY POSSIBLE.

Hi, I've just got into my electrical engineering course and I need some help with a question of mine here. During a site visit, we were shown a main LT panel which has switchgears, ammeters and different kinds of relays and the distribution network from that panel. In the main LT panel I've noted down the current readings as Ir - 163A, Iy - 150A and Ib - 147A. The Line to Line voltage is 415 V at 50 Hz and Line to Neutral voltage is 230V at 50 Hz. From the above details, how would I calculate the kVA rating of transformer? The primary side voltage of the transformer is 11 kV and the secondary side voltage is 415V and the frequency is 50 Hz.
