Horizontal multi stage means the operating shaft on which impellers are mounted is in horizontal orientation and similarly vertical in case of vertical multistage pumps.
the advantage of orientation is dependent on the site where it is to be used.
for an instance say there is a site where sump level is such that NPSHA < NPSHR so we go for vertical multistage pump.
second important benifit is obviously HIGH HEAD.

first of all multi stage centrifugal pump is used mainly
for two purposes
1.high head
2.high discharge
high head:both the pumps will be connected to the same shaft
i.e., the pumps are in series
high discharge:both the pumps are connected to different
shafts and have same deliver pipes i.e.,the pumps are
arranged in parallel
so each arrangements has its own advantage
