substation divided into two parts 1. switch-yard and 2. control-room
so switch-yard is a part of substation.
so this is a basic difference between switch-yard and substation.

switch yard serve of energy supply for the local areas of distribution in which these are located.Their main function are to receive energy transmitted at high voltage from generating station, reduce the voltage to a value appropriate for local distribution and provide facilities for switching.

Switch yard means switching of power generated from power plant to substation maintaining same voltage level where substation is used to step up or step down the power as per requirements

A substation consists of step-up/step-down transformer,
breakers, disconnects, and the necessary protection and
metering instruments. A switch yard contains these less the
transformer. Both of this can be configured to have
interconnections.

Switchyard is the outdoor yard where the switchgears are
being mounted, whereas substation can be indoor switchboard
also.

Sub-station means total equipment of HT errection such as
Breakers,AB switch,CT's,PT's and Transformer.
Switch Yard means only AB switches with CT and PT.
