for this we use the exciter which makes the some ac voltage
and give it to the AVR ( automatic voltage regulater)
electrically,, then it convert it into dc and back to the
field of alternater which produces and helps in producing
magnetic fields,,, and when engine rotates the armature
conducter moves into the magnetic field then it produces
voltage and so on,,,

Friends,When altenator rotor rotate through Prime mover/
Engine,E.m.f genrates in Exciter rotor due to resudual
magnetism in Exciter stator. then genrate AC voltage in Exc
rotor goes through rectifier (DC Voltage) to Main Rotor and
we gets AC voltage through alternator. AVR only receive
referance voltage from main output and gives voltage to
Exciter stator according to load and also maintain output
voltage as per our set voltage limits.

friends it should be noted that alternator produces power
,,,,so we need prime mover to rotate it,,,, like steam
turbine or hydro turbines
