how much time will take 20000 liter water to cool from 80-30 0C ? Assume all parameters constant..

Answer / p.kithan

Since this system is a non-continuous system and assuming
1.The cooling medium as Air at room temperature
The heat transfer with time can be calculated as,
dq/dt=UA(Ts-T)

WCpdT=UA(TS-T)dt

on integrating,

Time taken (t)=WCp\UA*ln((Ts-T2)/Ts-T1))

q=Heat transfered,w=weight of water,Cp=specific heat of
Air,Ts=saturated temperature of air,T1=temp of water at
initial,T2=temp at final,A=area of heat transfer.
U=over all heat transfer coeffcient(assume for water,ref-
perrys)

ACCOUNTING AND FINANCIAL ENGINEERING - EXAMPLE 34.27 : A biochemical engineering consultancy applies construction accounting in its finance. Its project began on 1 January 2010. Total revenue generated from the project was $9000. On 1 January 2011 as the budget, $2000 had been spent, with $6000 expected. However, the project cost increased latter, causing deviation from its initial budget on 1 January 2012, where $7000 had been spent, with $1400 expected. Let (estimated total cost) = (spent cost) + (expected cost to be spent), (percentage completion) = 100 (spent cost) / (estimated total costs), (total expected profits) = (total revenue) - (estimated total costs). Calculate : (a) total expected profits on 1 January 2011 and 1 January 2012; (b) estimated total cost as and not as the budget; (c) percentage completion of the project since the project began, in the first and second years.

PROCESS DESIGN - EXAMPLE 21.2 : The names of the flow streams could be represented by : H1 for first hot stream, H2 for second hot stream, C1 for first cold stream, C2 for second cold stream. Data of supply temperature Ts in degree Celsius : 150 for H1, 170 for H2, 30 for C1, 30 for C2. Data of target temperature Tt in degree Celsius : 50 for H1, 169 for H2, 150 for C1, 40 for C2. Data of heat capacity Cp in kW / degree Celsius : 3 for H1, 360 for H2, 3 for C1, 30 for C2. (a) Find the enthalpy changes, dH for all streams of flow H1, H2, C1 and C2 in the unit of kW. Take note of the formula dH = (Cp) (Tt - Ts). (b) Match the hot streams H1 and H2 with the suitable cold streams C1 and C2 to achieve the maximum energy efficiency.

ACCOUNTING AND FINANCIAL ENGINEERING - EXAMPLE 34.16 : An engineer would like to invest his money in a home, business and bond. The implicit interest payment frequency is monthly for home loans, quarterly for business loans; semi annually for bonds. A generalized mathematical formula to calculate I = interest rate equivalence is I = (1 + i / N) ^ N - 1 where i = annual interest rate, N = number of payment per year. (a) Calculate the value of N for : (i) home loans; (ii) business loans; (iii) bonds. (b) For i = 0.08, find the value of I for : (i) home loans; (ii) business loans; (iii) bonds.

Question 89 - A hemocytometer is a device that is used for counting cells. In an engineering experiment, 100 microlitres of cell suspension is diluted with 50 microlitres of Trypan blue dye. Only death cells appear blue in color when stained with the dye. There are 57 cells detected in a hemocytometer, where 5.3 % of them appear blue when the chamber of the meter is placed under a microscope. Each square of a chamber can contain 0.0001 mL of liquid. (a) Calculate the number of viable cells. (b) The cells ocupied 5 squares. Calculate the average number of viable cells / square. (c) Calculate the dilution factor of the cell suspension by using the formula : Dilution = final volume / initial volume. (d) Calculate the concentration of viable cells / mL by using the formula : Concentration = (Average number of viable cells / square) x dilution x (square / volume).
