An AVR is automatic voltage regulator. This device is
mainly used for keeping the terminal volage of generator at
constant level irrespective of load. This is normally used
to avoid over voltage & under volage of generator terminal
voltage.
over voltage on generator may cause generator stator
insulation failure and undervolage may cause supply of bad
quality of electricity.
AVR system all the time monitors terminal voltage of
generator and the current. This also sees whether the
connected load is inductive, resistive or capacitive and
regulates the excitation in such a way that terminal
voltage remains fixed at the set value.

AVR is Automatic Voltage Regulator and is essentially an
autotransformer and has two windings in it namely exciting
winding and series winding.
Exciting windimg is connected in parallel with the circuit
and the series winding is in series with the circuit.
series winding has tappings on it variation of which leads
to variation in the voltage at the secondary side.
It can boost aswellas buck the voltage depending on the
connection of the reversing switch that connects the series
winding to the ckt.

AVR is Automatic Voltage Regulator that is used to regulate
the output voltage of the generator. So that the electrical
equipments that are connected in line with the generator
shall receive regulated voltage supply without any change
in the output voltage from the generator
