with 50 hz frequency we can use high voltage like 440
voltage for 3 phase & 230 voltage for 1 phase for
transmission. also with high voltage transmission effiency is
high & required small diameter cable for transmission. in
america freq. is 60 hz & transmission voltage is 110 volts.

higher frequency give us higher output voltage ,india frequency selected 50hz if we select higher frequency then must be primemover speed more than 3000rpm . Above its speed only obtain by high temp.and pressure of steam.but indian metalorgy not take this temp.and pressure. if we given this then metal are melted.and also higher speed give higher centrifugal force on rotor .so causes india freq.50hz selected

As per my view,
Our Ancestors used and followed so most of the equipment's are designed for 50Hz if we change it we may need to change most of the equipment's currently using.
There are many advantages for different frequencies also disadvantages too.
as replay for one of the above comment, for transmitting it is better to use DC which has no frequency. So lower the losses and utilizes the entire conductor unlike AC flow on surface and inner area is useless (skin effect).

AC Supply is sinusoidal form, in this sinusoidal have 50
cycles per second. so we tak frequency 50 Hertz(Cycles per
second)

syn speed = Ns = 120*F/p ;
where F: frequency and p: no. of poles.
so, F = Ns*p/120.
frequency depends on speed of primemover and no. of rotor
poles.speed of turbine is 3000rpm for 2 poles, 1500 for 4
pole, 750 for 8 pole these r stds
so we have std frequency 50 hz std
