Connecting a capacitor across a generator always improves
powerfactor, but it will help depends up on the engine
capacity of the alternator, other wise the alternator will
be over loaded due to the extra watts consumed due to the
improvement on pf. Secondly, don't connect a capacitor
across an altenator while it is picking up or without any
other load.

if we connect the capacitor across the alternator for
compensating the inductive load it will be more use full,
improves the p.f hence reduces the load on the Altrnatr. if
it is under no/light load condition, alternator output
voltage will increase more than the rated, hence connected
load will be effected and hissing noise will observe from
the alternator, hence it will effect the efficiency and life
of the alternator
