In almost all the motors, in starting condition, Armature
current will be very high.
To control that current, starters will be used.

.To control the starting current of the motor thus avoiding
overheating of the windings.
.To avoid undervoltage hence tripping of other equipments
on the same line i.e for big motors
.Able to vary the speed of the motor
.Provides different starting/stopping points of the same
motor.
.Provides control measures of overcurrent, earthfault i.e
overload relays,circuit breakers,fuses
.Provides power isolation mechanism when one works on the
motor i.e fuses, breakers, isolators
.Able to know the current taken by the motor i.e ammeters

Normally starter are provided to control & protect the motor during starting & running condition . its help to control the starting current by controlling the voltage & frequency during starting in order to keep the motor winding temperature within the permissible limit.

Answer / parthi
The starter is used to
limit the starting
current of the motor.
The starting time motor
takes high current(5 to
6 times of its rated
current). This high
current damage the
motor windings. So the
starter is essential for
motor.
