WHAT YOU MEAN BY PROOF STRESS?

when a material such as Aluminium doesn't have an obvious
yield point and yet undergoes large strain after the
proportional limit is exceeded an arbitrary yield stress may
be determined by Offset method .A line parallel to initial
part is drawn which is offset by some standard amount of
strain such as 0.2 % ,the inersection of the offset point
defines the yield stress which is slightly above the
proportional limit and is called 'PROOF STRESS'.

Many alloys do not show either a definite elastic limit or
yield point. Because of the importance of the yield point
to designers, calculations have been developed to produce
an artificial approximation. This approximation is known
as ‘proof stress’ and relates to a pre-determined amount of
permanent deformation measured against the strain axis.
A line parallel to the initial gradient of the stress strain
diagram is drawn. Where the drawn line and the curve
intersect is the proof stress . Proof stress is
most often calculated around the values of 0.1% and 0.2%
of the gauge length.

when draw 0.2% parallal line to stress- strain curve from the
orgin in x direction(strain) it will meet in curve at a point
that point is yield point corresponding stress value is proof
