Answer / rakesh kumar
Fineness modulus is an empirical factor obtained by adding the cumulative percentages of aggregate retained on each of the standard sieves ranging from 80 mm to 150 micron and dividing this sum by 100.
Fineness modulus is generally used to get an idea of how coarse or fine the aggregate is. More fineness modulus value indicates that the aggregate is coarser and small value of fineness modulus indicates that the aggregate is finer

Answer / dr savitha natak
Fineness modulus of sand is an index arrived based on the particle size analysis and then dividing the sum of the cumulative percentage of particles retained on the sieves by 100.
it is important to note that higher the fineness modulus, higher is the coarser portion of the sand. The fineness modulus plays very important role in mix proportion designing of the concrete.
Earlier concrete mix designing is not a very elaborative subject thought there have been guidelines. But with present varietal needs of construction industry, from earth-scrapers to space-scrapers, including the mid-oceans, concrete has been put under multi-complex and multi-vital role both as a product and long-term performer. The use of complimentary cementious materials and chemical admixtures has become essential to meet the performance requirement. In this background the knowledge on fineness modulus and its implications on mix designs and concrete properties is much essential. Hence this type of fora is welcome to allow the knowledge percolated to the young engineers.
