Answer / sjtbehera
nominal mix is some fixed ratio of cment,sand, and
aggregate determine by IS code.
ex-M20 is n1:11/2:3
M25- 1:1:2
Design mix is determine by conducting test in lab by
conisedering local avilable material.

Nominal Mix:
 Fixed ratio of aggregate-sand-cement.
 Mix to be prepared on volume basis which may leads
under or over- rich mix.
 Not consideration of local available materials.
 Compressive strength of mix was calculated in
laboratory.
 These mixes can be used not more than rich mix
ratio of M20.
 It gives under demanding performance.
Design Mix:
 The Mix designed as available materials locally.
 Cost effective.
 Minimize the material and maximize the strength,
 These mixes are designed for cast in situ.
 These mixes are give high strength and high
performance

Nominal
It is the fixed ratio of Cement:sand:coarse
in this case we assume that the cement sand matrix may fill up all the gap between the coarse
in general it comes like
M5=1:4:8
M10=1:3:6
M15=1:2:4
M20=1:1.5:3
M25=1:1:2
as per IS:456:2000
Design mix
in general the cement sand matrix dose not fill the gaps between coarse and thats result more void less strength
to overcome this fact few correction are made to design concert are called mix design
the step of design as follow
*suggested value of stranded deviation
*target strength of mix design
*select w/c ratio with the help of graph etc.
please fined IS:10262:2004 for any further details

Nominal Mix is done by Volume as per Concrete mix and
Design mix is done by Weight,where higher grade of concrete
is require.

Nominal Mixes
In the past the specifications for concrete prescribed the
proportions of cement, fine and coarse aggregates. These
mixes of fixed cement-aggregate ratio which ensures adequate
strength are termed nominal mixes. These offer simplicity
and under normal circumstances, have a margin of strength
above that specified. However, due to the variability of mix
ingredients the nominal concrete for a given workability
varies widely in strength.
Designed Mixes
In these mixes the performance of the concrete is specified
by the designer but the mix proportions are determined by
the producer of concrete, except that the minimum cement
content can be laid down. This is most rational approach to
the selection of mix proportions with specific materials in
mind possessing more or less unique characteristics. The
approach results in the production of concrete with the
appropriate properties most economically. However, the
designed mix does not serve as a guide since this does not
guarantee the correct mix proportions for the prescribed
performance.

nominal mix is said to be laboratory.in which we have
adequate conditions provided.
but design mix can be done in situ or at site where all
necessary condn doesnt prevails.
nominal mix result cant be equal to design mix ever........
